BHE Exhibition at Kluge Ruhe Collection in Virginia

April 10, 2024 Basil Hall

In mid-March, the first instalment of what we hope will be many print exhibitions in future, opened at Kluge-Ruhe Collection in Virginia, USA. The Kluge Ruhe holds the largest collection of Australia First Nations art outside Australia, and in 2022 I presented them with over 1300 prints from the Basil Hall Editions archive.

The gift led to a Creative Australia (Australia Council) grant for an indigenous curator program to be established, resulting in the appointment of Jessica Hutchens as curator of the first and second print exhibitions from the BHE collection. Jess has written a perceptive essay in the accompanying catalogue, and a longer version appeared in the Autumn edition of Imprint, the Print Council of Australia’s quarterly magazine.

Seen here are: Jess Hutchens, Dr Denise Salvestro, Dr Louise Hamby, Basil, Lisa Waup and Karen Mills.

ABOUT BHE

For the last nineteen years Basil has run Basil Hall Editions, first from a purpose-built studio in Darwin, then from two studios: one in Braidwood, NSW and one in Canberra. In 2020 Basil moved all the equipment to Canberra. He and his team host visiting artists or travel to remote Aboriginal  communities, collaborating with over 100 artists a year, or other regional locations, offering workshops.
