BHE at work on new screen prints for the Spinifex mob

March 19, 2026 Basil Hall

Nearly seven years ago we organised for some acetate to be sent to Tjuntjuntjara in remote WA so that a number of the senior men could create the painted separations for a series of screen prints. The strong demand for paintings from this talented group of senior men has been such that the acetates were eventually put aside and remained in a drawer until late in 2025. By this time, Co-ordinators Amanda and Brian had left and I contacted the new studio manager to see if the acetates were still there. Eleanore Neumann from the Kluge Ruhe Collection in Virginia, USA visited Tjuntjun in 2025 and it was she who finally prompted a look in the drawers for the old plastics. Two of the artists have, sadly, now passed away, but their completed paintings, and six others by current Spinifex artists, have arrived at our studio in Canberra and editioning is underway! Here is a sneak peek at one of Ian Rictor’s images in the studio this week.
