Warmun artists arrive at BHE to work in March

April 29, 2025 Basil Hall

Three emerging artists from Warmun Arts in Turkey Creek, Kimberley, WA came in March, accompanied by Perth lecturer, Andy Quilty. Jonathan Malgil, Troy Drill and Dwayne Jessell have all exhibited widely as painters and two of the men have recently been seen in the Lester Prize, so they are experienced image makers and have been trying a few printmaking techniques at the art centre with Andy. We gave them a few choices and they decided to make collagraph prints and also to work on a few small etching plates. We had a great time with these enthusiastic and talented guys. I just wish we could have had longer, but we are hoping to get a chance to print up some of their plates in the near future. Here is Jonathan with one of his colour etchings.

ABOUT BHE

For the last nineteen years Basil has run Basil Hall Editions, first from a purpose-built studio in Darwin, then from two studios: one in Braidwood, NSW and one in Canberra. In 2020 Basil moved all the equipment to Canberra. He and his team host visiting artists or travel to remote Aboriginal  communities, collaborating with over 100 artists a year, or other regional locations, offering workshops.
