Mowanjum Arts in Derby is the latest arts centre to purchase a press and set up their own printing space. Established last year, the space has a great WA-made etching press, drying racks, good benches and a stock of plates and woodblocks to print. Basil’s second trip to this part of the world was designed around training printers to operate the press, rather than generating new work. Over three days, Basil and the two printers, Tanisha Allies and Derek (“Dean”) Smith printed linocuts, woodblocks and some etchings on the press (varying the pressure, backing and runners each time) and also covered chine collé and hand-printing.
