April Workshops in Beswick and Katherine

April 9, 2013 Basil Hall

Basil and Nena Zanos have just returned from running workshops in Beswick (Wugularr) and Katherine in the Northern Territory. With the Wet Season finally starting in earnest, it was a damp affair. The team was caught by floodwaters across the Stuart Highway just north of Katherine on the first evening. Over 2 metres of water covered the bridge near Beswick too, so two days of the woodblock and etching workshop were spent at Djilpin’s gallery space in Katherine. Artists carved new woodblocks, to be hand printed in colour in our studio later, and also drew a series of the signature line etchings for which Beswick has become well known. We spent one day at the community too, as the floodwaters receded, and completed the week by conducting a workshop for Katherine residents – some non-Indigenous and some Indigenous- at Territory Craft. We were grateful for the support of Katherine Regional Arts, Djilpin Arts and the Katherine High School Art Dept (for the loan of their etching press).

ABOUT BHE

For the last nineteen years Basil has run Basil Hall Editions, first from a purpose-built studio in Darwin, then from two studios: one in Braidwood, NSW and one in Canberra. In 2020 Basil moved all the equipment to Canberra. He and his team host visiting artists or travel to remote Aboriginal  communities, collaborating with over 100 artists a year, or other regional locations, offering workshops.
