Sad news from Yirrkala

October 21, 2021 Basil Hall

Another sad day for the community and Art Centre at Yirrkala. Buku Larnggay Mulka will be missing one of their most prolific and enthusiastic artists today. Ms N Yunupingu was a wonderful, dynamic and dedicated painter and printmaker at the art centre for many years and her quiet presence, often in the middle of – and dwarfed by – a massive bark or board, was so much a part of daily life there. Thank you for making beautiful etchings, screen prints, carvings…you would happily paint your quirky designs onto anything that was placed in front of you – paper, metal, lino, bark – and often on the board underneath too! I particularly loved the Seven Sisters Project that you and your sisters completed in 2012. This image is one you did on a huge etching plate alongside your family, two of whom have also departed since.

ABOUT BHE

For the last nineteen years Basil has run Basil Hall Editions, first from a purpose-built studio in Darwin, then from two studios: one in Braidwood, NSW and one in Canberra. In 2020 Basil moved all the equipment to Canberra. He and his team host visiting artists or travel to remote Aboriginal  communities, collaborating with over 100 artists a year, or other regional locations, offering workshops.
