Live music. It’s not all work on Skopelos

June 25, 2012 Basil Hall

After long days at the press (admittedly including a two hour lunch break at the beach), it has been wonderful to eat out late in the evenings and listen to world-renowned guitarist Kostas Kalafatis and Apostolos (bouzouki player seen here) who play together regularly at Anna’s restaurant on Skopelos in the summer each year. One of Apostolos’ students was also playing with the duo on the nights we went. Kostas came and sat with us after his performance and told us a bit about Rembetika music. Some in the party also googled “rembetika” on their iPhones and came up with the words to many of these famous old songs about love, war, loss and hardship through Greece’s more recent past. I don’t think any have been written about the current economic climate or their quarter final loss in the European Cup the other night, but give it time!
