The first Australian Indigenous printmaker, Kevin Gilbert, made the lino blocks for this new edition in the 1960’s. He would have made a proof or two at the time, using a baren or spoon to burnish the back of a piece of light litho paper to release the image. No edition was made then, though, and like a number of other images of Kevin’s, the blocks were stored in Central NSW and only found again in recent years. Kevin’s widow, Ellie Gilbert, has entrusted us with the task of printing up editions of these old lino blocks, and this one: “Eve & the Garden” or “Wahlo Desert Soak” has just been finished in three colours from three blocks. It has been printed by Kevin’s grand-daughter, Kari, and me, and will be available through Ellie.
