Lizzie Horne pulling a coloured woodblock proof off the press. They were first drawn onto a kauri pine ply sheet and cut out using woodcutting chisels and gouges. The image was inked and hand-printed onto Awaki Japanese paper using a baren. Then Basil’s cunning colouring technique was employed to apply powder pigment to the chine colle sheet, before it was run through the press at NERAM, Armidale, to bond it to a sheet of Magnani.
If you would like to learn more about this technique you can safely do at home with little or no equipment, come and do a workshop at Basil Hall Editions, Braidwood! Email now!
