Lisa Waup & Karen Mills Kluge Ruhe residency continues at Basil Hall Editions

July 20, 2024 Basil Hall

We didn’t quite finish what we set out to do in Charlottesville, Virginia in March, so thanks to the Kluge Ruhe Collection at the University of Virginia and the Getty Foundation, Lisa Waup (Melbourne) and Karen Mills (Darwin) were able to take up where we left off and continue to work on the collagraphs they commenced in USA. We have just had the most dynamic two weeks in the studio and each artist has produced dozens of new works with Kari Gilbert and me, as you can see in the following posts on this site. For the printmakers, the images were made using a mat board base, cut into, collaged, painted with gesso or acrylic and coated with shellac. We used a variety of plates, stencils, a la poupee and multi plate techniques. More images to follow when I have some of Lisa’s to add to this post.

ABOUT BHE

For the last nineteen years Basil has run Basil Hall Editions, first from a purpose-built studio in Darwin, then from two studios: one in Braidwood, NSW and one in Canberra. In 2020 Basil moved all the equipment to Canberra. He and his team host visiting artists or travel to remote Aboriginal  communities, collaborating with over 100 artists a year, or other regional locations, offering workshops.
