November workshop at Jilamara Arts

November 23, 2022 Basil Hall

I have just come back from the Tiwi Islands, where I ran a new workshop for Jilamara Arts. It has been 5 years since my last etching workshop, with subsequent visits being interrupted by Covid etc. Anyway, this time we made collagraphs, which will have silkscreened colours printed over them later in Canberra. Nineteen new editions will hopefully come out of this trip, with stunning new works by Dino Wilson, Janice Murray, Timothy Cook, Raelene Kerinaua and Michelle Woody, for example. Locally ground ochres worked really well on the collagraph plates, printing up just like hand-applied ochre, and making many of the store-bought materials I brought up rather superfluous!

ABOUT BHE

For the last nineteen years Basil has run Basil Hall Editions, first from a purpose-built studio in Darwin, then from two studios: one in Braidwood, NSW and one in Canberra. In 2020 Basil moved all the equipment to Canberra. He and his team host visiting artists or travel to remote Aboriginal  communities, collaborating with over 100 artists a year, or other regional locations, offering workshops.
