Back to Yirrkala

August 18, 2019 Basil Hall

in June, Pam and I went to Yirrkala to produce a new series (the third) of string designs. The wonderful old ladies, Mulkun and Nongirrnga, showed the young printers and a group of senior students from the Yirrkala school a number of the string designs they remembered (there are over 190, I was told) and they had a go themselves with some bush string made by Merrkiwuy Ganambarr-Stubbs. The string was then carefully laid onto a soft grounded plate and run through the press to leave a clear impression. These impressions in the “wax” were etched in acid and have since been editioned for the Gapan Gallery at the Garma Festival in August.
