20 years of printmaking at Buku Larrnggay in Yirrkala

August 2, 2015 Basil Hall

Nomad Art in Darwin is currently showing a strong group of 20 aluminium plate etchings by artists from Yirrkala. The exhibition marks 20 years since Andrew Blake and Basil set up a new etching press in the Print space at Buku Larrnggay Mulka (Art Centre). Over the last two decades under the careful guidance of Buku staff (including Andrew and Dianne Blake, Will Stubbs and Annie Studd) numerous workshops have been run in Yirrkala and and Darwin to help train printers and introduce different printmaking techniques to well over 100 artists. Basil has been fortunate enough to have had ongoing work with the art centre over all those years and was invited to Arnhem Land to help with the proofing and subsequent printing of this large project. Congratulations to Annie and her newest printers for getting this impressive body of work editioned and thanks for allowing us to be part of the celebrations.

ABOUT BHE

For the last nineteen years Basil has run Basil Hall Editions, first from a purpose-built studio in Darwin, then from two studios: one in Braidwood, NSW and one in Canberra. In 2020 Basil moved all the equipment to Canberra. He and his team host visiting artists or travel to remote Aboriginal  communities, collaborating with over 100 artists a year, or other regional locations, offering workshops.
